Wedding dress shopping can feel like a big deal, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. At Gown Boutique of Charleston, our goal is to make your bridal appointment fun, personal, and as stress-free as possible.
With the largest selection of wedding dresses in Charleston, you’ll have plenty to choose from, but you won’t be left standing in a room wondering where to start. That’s where your stylist comes in.
It Starts With a Conversation
When you arrive at GBC, we don’t just send you straight to the racks. We start with a consultation to get to know you, your wedding, and what you have in mind for your dress. Maybe you’ve had a Pinterest board saved for years and know exactly what you want. Maybe you have absolutely no idea. Both are completely fine!
We’ll talk about your venue, wedding day, personal style, what you’ve been drawn to, and anything you already know you don’t want. This gives your stylist a starting point and helps us understand what will make you feel amazing.
Start With a Few Favorites
Once we’ve talked through your vision, we’ll have you choose around three or four gowns to start with. This part helps us to see what catches your eye and pay attention to what you’re naturally drawn toward. Sometimes the dress you pick off the rack is exactly what you pictured yourself wearing. Other times, it’s the one you never would have chosen for yourself.
And that’s where the fun really starts.
As you try on your first few gowns, your stylist is paying attention to what you love and what you don’t. Maybe you love the neckline of one dress but want a different skirt. Maybe you like the shape of another but want more detail. Your stylist takes all of that into account and starts curating gowns specifically for you.
Let Your Stylist Do Their Thing
One of the best parts of shopping at GBC is having an expert stylist who is looking at the whole picture. Once we see what elements you are loving, your stylist will start pulling additional gowns based on your feedback. This is where being open-minded can make such a difference. We’ve had plenty of brides come in convinced they want one particular style and end up falling in love with something completely different. It happens all the time!
You don’t have to know exactly what your dream dress looks like before you walk through our doors. Sometimes you need to see it on your body to realize what you love.
The Finishing Touches
Once you’re getting close to finding the one, we like to take things one step further and start accessorizing. Because the dress is only part of the final bridal look!
We’ll bring out veils, earrings, and other accessories so you can see everything together. Adding a veil or the right pair of earrings can completely change how a gown feels, and it’s one of our favorite parts of the appointment. It also gives you a chance to picture the whole look instead of just the dress hanging on a rack.
Come With an Open Mind
Our biggest piece of advice? Come with an open mind.
You may have a very specific idea of what you want—and that’s great! But don’t be afraid to try something your stylist pulls for you. Your stylist sees hundreds of brides and gowns, and sometimes they can spot a connection between you and a dress that you wouldn’t have noticed yourself.
Also, don’t feel like you have to know what you like right away. That’s what trying dresses on is for!
Be Ready to Say Yes
Another piece of advice we give our brides: come ready to say yes if you find the dress.
At GBC, 85% of our brides find their gown the first time they shop for their wedding dress. That doesn’t mean you have to say yes to a dress you aren’t sure about. It simply means that when you find the gown that makes you feel like you, it’s okay to trust that feeling.
Sometimes brides think they need to visit three or four stores before they can possibly know. But if you find the dress, you find the dress! Give yourself permission to enjoy the moment with the people you love rather than feeling like you need to keep shopping just because you thought you were supposed to.

You get to bring your favorite people, try on gowns you may have never pictured yourself wearing, find the details that make you feel beautiful, and maybe even have a few happy tears along the way.
